History

+ 1986 | The Beginning

Mike Schaap's home building career started at a young age in high school while he worked on a framing crew for a local home builder. After graduation, and with years of experience already under his belt, Mike continued framing as he attended college and pursued his degree in ministry. It was during this time that others also began asking him to manage and complete framing projects all on his own. From there, his client's needs and project scopes continued to evolve and grow, which eventually led him to the decision to undertake the entire home building process from start to finish.

+ 2000 | Benchmark

By 2000, Schaap launched what would become known as Benchmark Wood Studio out of a desire to provide his projects with fully custom millwork, furniture, and cabinetry.

+ 2005 | New Building

By 2005, Mike Schaap Builders and the newly formed Benchmark Wood Studio had experienced significant growth with the expanding complexity of projects. As a result, a 60,000 sq ft facility at 12969 Greenly Street was built to house the latest technology in wood manufacturing and accommodate both companies under one roof.

+ 2006 | Design Studio

Soon after being settled in to the new Greenly Street facility, Benchmark Design Studio was added to the impressive list of services, offering clients complete architectural design, interior design and selection services for a seamless experience that is efficient, well-organized and refreshingly smooth.

+ 2016 | 30 Years!

Mike Schaap Builders, Inc celebrates its 30th anniversary and is recognized with a prestigious Best in Midwest Award for its Michigan Lake House project through the Best in American Living Awards.
